GIVE A 'LOTTO'
AVERAGE BRIT WOULD DONATE 28% OF WINNINGS TO CHARITY
25 November 2019
When it comes to winning big on the Lotto or Euromillions, people in the UK are a generous bunch. Three-quarters (74%) of us would give away some of our winnings to good causes, with the average person claiming they’d donate over a quarter (28%) of their prize to charity.
The polling, from the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF), comes after a mystery UK ticket holder won a £170 million Euromillions jackpot in October. The lucky winner has decided to stay anonymous.
“Pretty much all of us would love to scoop the jackpot on the lottery, but what’s really encouraging to see is that the majority of us would also use a sizeable chunk of the winnings to make the world a better place,” comments CAF’s Head of Research Susan Pinkney.
When asked if people who wins the lottery should use some of the winnings to help those less fortunate than themselves, only 15% said they disagreed. Nearly four in 10 of people (37%) – equivalent to almost 20 million adults in the UK – would also like to use their winnings to set up a charity or charitable foundation to help a cause close to their heart.
In October, the World Giving Index revealed that the UK is the seventh most generous nation in the world over the last decade. Further research from earlier in the year shows that UK households gave over £10 billion to charity last year.
