GIVING TUESDAY BRINGS IN £10,000 A MINUTE

A HUGE DAY FOR CHARITIES ACROSS THE COUNTRY

18 December 2019

The Charities Aid Foundation (CAF), which runs the campaign in the UK, reveals figures from Visa that show £14.2 million was donated via their payment platforms in the UK on 3rd December.

That amounts to nearly £10,000 a minute – and is a 48% rise in donations made though Visa compared to an ordinary Tuesday in 2019.

The Big Give charity’s week-long Christmas Challenge, which ran from the 3rd to the 10th of December, was one of the UK’s biggest ever match-funding campaigns. On Giving Tuesday itself, it raised more than £5.1 million – well up on last year’s total of £4.5 million.

Globally, PayPal donations raised nearly $106 million on the day itself – an increase on last year’s total of $98 million.

In the UK, PayPal made £150,000 available for matching customer donations through their PayPal Giving Fund.

RBS donated £250,000 to charities chosen by its employees and customers, and made £100,000 available to match customers’ donations via their MyReward points.

Giving Tuesday also had a big impact on the number of people singing up to payroll giving schemes at work. The numbers show that as a result of these new sign-ups, an extra £180,000 will go to charitable causes over the next year.

CAF’s Gráinne Mathews, Giving Tuesday Lead in the UK, is thrilled by the positive impact felt by so many good causes as a result.

“Giving Tuesday 2019 has smashed the Charities Aid Foundation’s expectations and the hopes of our partners.

“CAF’s research has shown a worrying decline in the amount of people giving to charity, which makes Giving Tuesday so important in reminding everyone of the amazing work charities are doing and how we can help them.

“Our sincere thanks go to the many people who worked together to make a world of difference.”

It was another year of immense generosity with over 3,300 charities and businesses taking part, a big jump on last year.

Giving Tuesday once again trended on UK Twitter and received celebrity backing from the likes of The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Michelle Obama and even the cast of Sesame Street.
