INCOME OF ARMED FORCES CHARITIES UP OVER FIVE YEAR PERIOD
30 June 2018
The income of Armed Forces charities in England and Wales has grown by a third over five years, with £236m more a year going to this cause than in 2012.
Data analysed by the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) shows that the income of Armed Forces charities has been rising for years, ahead of Armed Forces Day this Saturday 30th June. The research examined annual returns submitted to the Charity Commission between 2012 and 2016 from more than 1,100 charities.
The data reveals that in 2012, total income from donations and investments was £716m. Between 2012 and 2016, the last year for which data is available, this increased to £952m a year. Income from legacies – financial gifts left in people’s wills – has also risen over the five year period, from £35m to £49m.
Susan Pinkney, Head of Research at Charities Aid Foundation, said: “People across the country continue to be moved by the sacrifices our troops make in the service of the country, and this is reflected in the money given to military charities which includes people leaving gifts in their wills. Charities offer incredible support to serving troops, veterans and their families every day of the year and it is fantastic to see the extent to which that work is held dear by the public.”
