NEWCASTLE VS SUNDERLAND - THE CHARITY TYNE WEAR DERBY

WHICH CLUB HAS THE MOST GENEROUS FANS?

21 April 2019

Newcastle and Sunderland may not often face one another on the football pitch these days, but the battle to boast the most generous fans has gone down to the wire.

New research from the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) shows that both clubs can claim a resounding victory when it comes to their supporters’ stepping up for a good cause.

In a close run contest, the Magpies’ fans narrowly edged out their neighbours to the south with 63% donating money to charity in the last year, up on the Mackems at 61%.

Newcastle’s Toon Army didn’t stop at cash donations in their drive for supremacy – 57% also gave goods to charity in the previous 12 months – such as by donating items to a charity shop – putting them comfortably in front of Sunderland supporters on 50%.

But no one can accuse the Mackems of not turning up on the day – 20% of Sunderland fans volunteered for a charity during the previous year, compared to 16% of Newcastle fans.

Sunderland supporters rounded out their effort when 27% said they’d bought an ethical product in the last 12 months, edging ahead of Newcastle fans on 22%.

The Magpies’ fans told CAF that they were more likely to sign a petition and sponsor someone for charity, while Sunderland fans were likelier to take part in a public demonstration or protest.

Susan Pinkney, Head of Research at the Charities Aid Foundation adds:

“Newcastle and Sunderland fans can both hold their heads high. This derby is all about winners. They may give in different ways, but what shines through is that football supporters are generous and highly engaged with their communities and causes close to their hearts.”
