SWAP BLACK FRIDAY 'BARGAINS' FOR REAL WORLD GIFTS THAT GIVE BACK
A HANDY GIFT GUIDE THAT BOOSTS CHARITIES
29 November 2019
As the consumer body Which? reports that only one in 20 Black Friday bargains turns out to be an actual deal, a leading charity is calling on shoppers to “Ditch the Deals” and go for the sure thing – gifts that support good causes up and down the country.
The London-based Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) is reminding shoppers of some of the great gift ideas that are reasonably priced and support good causes.
Which? monitored the price of 83 items advertised on Black Friday last year from various retailers, and discovered that the majority of items were on sale at the same price or cheaper throughout the rest of the year.
CAF’s Caroline Mallan said:
“We’ve already seen some predictions from consumer experts that Black Friday might not prove as popular this year. Luckily, Giving Tuesday – the day to give back to a good cause – is happening on December 3rd. It’s the perfect chance to support a charity and cross those items off your Christmas to-do list at the same time.”
Research indicates that the average Black Friday shopper in Britain will spend over £250.
But for less than £200, you could nab the following:
- 120 tins of Brewgooder beer – a win-win solution! With 100% of the brewer’s profits committed to bringing clean drinking water to a million people.
For less than £100:
For around £50:
- Build toilets in the developing world – you can pay for a mason to construct a personal toilet for families who need them, via WaterAid.
- Provide support and training for refugees – you could get a cookery class from Migrateful, taught by a refugee, asylum seeker or isolated migrant. This social enterprise offers language and skills training to their chefs, as well as a vital source of income.
For around £20 or less:
- Buy a BuddyBox – a hug in a box – The Blurt Foundation works to increase awareness of depression and offers one-off and monthly deliveries of ingenious self-care boxes of mini-treats, plus a wide array of cheery stationary and gift ideas.
- Give polio vaccines to 100 kids – Unicef offers the chance to buy 100 polio vaccines for children around the world, for just £14.
- A handy tin to keep treats for your dogs – The Dogs Trust is selling this tin for less than £15. You can store treats for your dogs in them whilst also helping the charity to protect thousands of vulnerable animals each year.
- The Marie Curie Bee Free mug – 100% of the profits from this beautiful artist-designed mug go towards providing care for terminally ill people in their own homes.
