CORPORATE GIANTS AND OVER 2,000 CHARITIES SUPPORT GIVING TUESDAY
THE GLOBAL GIVING PHENOMENON
9 November 2018
Some of Britain’s biggest corporate and charity names have come together to back #GivingTuesday, the international day of giving.
Retail players including Co-op and Morrisons are backing the global campaign, alongside other big brands and organisations such as Thomson Reuters, PwC, Dixons Carphone, Argos, RBS, Kingfisher, ASOS, ITV and Costa Coffee.
Over 2,000 charities are so far signed up as
Giving Tuesday partners, including Barnardo’s, Marie Curie, Cancer Research UK, Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity and the RSPCA.
Giving Tuesday encourages people to do good stuff for a cause close to their hearts after the sales on Black Friday and Cyber Monday. This will be the fifth birthday of Giving Tuesday in the UK, having been introduced to the country in 2014 after starting life back in the US in 2012.
In 2017, celebrities including Tom Daley, Emma Watson and Richard Branson supported the campaign. Over $300m was raised online in 24 hours, with people participating from 150 countries including Antarctica.
The Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) – which runs Giving Tuesday in the UK – is encouraging everyone to get involved in any way they can, whether it’s by dropping some spare change in a donations tin, organising a bake sale at work, or donating unwanted clothes to a local charity shop.
Giving Tuesday will take place on 27th November.
Ben Russell, Director of Communications at the Charities Aid Foundation, said: “This is a milestone for Giving Tuesday in the UK; five years in and the campaign just gets bigger and better every year, helping more and more people to give to the causes that they cherish. We’re busy planning for the 27th of November and can’t wait to see how our charity and corporate partners are going to pull out all the stops on the big day.”
Georgia Paton, Fundraising Product Manager at Marie Curie, adds: “Giving Tuesday has really become a key time in the Marie Curie calendar. Each year it just gets bigger and bigger and it’s an ideal time for all of our incredible staff to come together and thank our supporters for all of the amazing work they do all year round.
“It’s also a fantastic opportunity to get involved in an international day of giving. Whether you’re launching a new product, partnership or awareness campaign – the social media spotlight of Giving Tuesday is the perfect time.”
Lewis Coghlin, Director of Income Generation at the RSPCA, comments: "We know Christmas is a time that many people choose to support charities and Giving Tuesday is the perfect chance for people to do that. There are so many ways to help, you can donate some items to a charity shop, buy some charity Christmas cards or presents, support an online campaign or sign up to leave a legacy which will have a lasting impact."
